The trip back to the diner ended up being pointless. No one remembered seeing Francis there, and even if they did, they didn’t have security cameras that were currently working. It left us with little choice but to go back to Francis and ask her ourselves.

She liked to volunteer at the library at this time of day, so Leo drove us to the Moonberry Public Library. I spotted Francis through the glass double doors, putting away some books. The woman, at first glance, looked mild-mannered. Short with greying blonde hair cut in a cute bob.

But if there was one thing I knew to be very true, it was that looks could be deceiving.

Onyx was a great example of that.

Leo and I headed inside, Onyx perched on the usual spot on my shoulder. I cleared my throat, hoping to get Francis’s attention.

Francis is one too.

One what?

A Venus fly trap.

What?

A witch, Starla! She’s a witch. Her magical aura is strong.

How sure are you?

A hundred percent sure. I’d bet my fur on it.

She looked up and smiled.

“Hello, how can I help you?”

“I was hoping I could talk to you about Olive Brown’s murder.”

Her face fell. “I see.”

“Ma’am, we don’t need to talk to you long. Just ask a few questions about the murder and then get out of your hair.”

She sighed, motioning for us to follow her to a table at the back.

“I already talked to you all about the murder. Why are you bothering me again?”

I smiled faintly. “Well, we checked out your alibi and it turns out that you weren’t there at all.”

And you’re a witch! Onyx said, jumping onto the table and sitting directly in front of Francis.

“Leo, could you give me and Francis a moment?” I asked, relieved when he nodded and walked off without any complaint. “Francis, I know you are a witch. Were you and Olive once in the same coven?”

Francis lifted a brow. “I thought I sensed a familiar. Smart of you to send the cop away—I wasn’t going to answer any questions in front of a mortal—no less one who’s a cop!”

“So, where were you really, at the time of the murder?”

“I was at the diner,” Francis repeated, giving me a look. “It’s not my fault they can’t confirm my alibi, but I was there.”

She’s not going to budge on that. We should drop it and ask more about the coven.

“What about the coven?”

Francis sighed. “Yes, Olive and I were once in the same coven.”

“So, you were in the same coven as Syria Amos?”

“Yes, but why does that come as such a surprise? In such a small town as Moonberry, it makes sense witches would want to engage in the same coven.”

I nodded. “And are you in a coven currently?”

“No, which I don’t see is any of your business,” she snapped. “Look, are we done? I have to get back to work.”

You don’t get paid. What rush is there?

“Francis, is there any way you can confirm that you were at the diner at the time of the murder?”

She shrugged.
